The Dangers of Removing Ice Dams Yourself
Category: Ice Dam Removal
Ice dams are no fun for homeowners to deal with, and one thing is certain: ice + roof + you = not a good mix.
Here are a few reasons we seriously recommend against you removing ice dams yourself:
You could hurt yourself
There are probably a lot of household projects that could leave you with an injury, but falling off a roof or ladder doesn’t seem like one of those you’d want to risk. Using a ladder around ice is never a good idea because ladder could easily slip when you’re climbing
You could hurt your roof
If you’re hacking away at the ice with a shovel, axe, hammer or another tool, you could puncture your roof. If you puncture your roof you are damaging the shingles and also breaking your roof’s protective barrier.
You hurt other exterior elements
Unless you like the look of bent gutters, soffits and fascia, we recommend that you stay away from doing this job yourself.
Let the professionals assume all the risk
Professional ice dam removal is definitely the way to go. Not only do they assume all the risks, but the best way to remove ice dams is by using steam, and the professionals have the experience and equipment to get it done right.
